Defying these authoritative validations, Gigi Scaria refuses to sing a paean to the virtue of lightness, as we might have expected him to do - since he addresses himself to the globalisation-era city, working mercurially across painting, sculpture-installation, photography and video. Instead, to my mind, Scaria unabashedly affirms the properties of the opposite virtue, that heaviness, and urges us to reconsider our preconceived negativity towards it.
