In ‘Four painters, Four directions’, Atul Dodiya has engaged with Akbar Padamsee, Gieve Patel, Bhupen Khakhar and Tyeb Mehta, the artists of the ‘Focus (4 Painters 4 Directions)’ exhibition, 1979, Gallery Chemould. While revisiting the landscape of artist friendships, he invites us to meet his old friends through mementos of photos, paintings, clippings and objects.

With each cabinet, intimacy is woven through text (by Geeta Kapur from the original catalogue essay), through symbolic gestures reminiscent of each of the four painters' characteristic imprints, and through the mentor-friend-guide-confidant web of relationships that Dodiya honours through this memory.
