Drawing from the popular culture of Manga, local to Japan, I tried to facilitate a dialogue between the subculture of erotica and desire the genre perpetuates and the dominant projection of Japan’s homogenous and upright values. A series of monumental drawings developed from the exotic, erotic, and neurotic popular Japanese (porno)graphic Manga comic characters, blew into a surreal, out of proportion public overdose to facilitate a dialogue between the subculture of erotica and desire and the dominant projection of Japan’s homogeneous and upright values. I was drawn to how Manga blew small details out of proportion to make them surreal. The fantastic grotesqueness of the genre translated as a stylistic and psychological release from the restraints of form and propriety. The figures are ambiguous and androgynous and refuse to be always dictated by cultural and anatomical conformity to any immediate identity of gender/race/class/caste/locality.

( Unfortunately, the work was censored in the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art while it was traveling in Seoul, Korea, in 2009.)
