This is a work-in-progress, a continuing project, in which the artist is in the process of producing a series based around the idea of the nation, by playing on the history of images of Mother India from a moment of central importance in the Indian freedom movement, in the late nineteenth century. Rather than a single exhibition or series of photographs, the project aims to show a complex range of works, in varying media, including photography, video, installation, sculpture, live performance, and sound installation, as they come into being.
The works include, Motherland: The Festive Tableau (2009), 2009 Motherland: The Festive Tableau, Motherland, Studio Portrait with Flag: Om Flag, Trishul (2009), Motherland: Lion and Flag (2010), Motherland: The Great Sacrifice (2010), Motherland, live performance with Mamta Sagar (2010) and Motherland: Where Angels Fear to Tread, Tableau/ Installation (2011).
