I’m starting to mark time by the number of footsteps taken on the ice. Despite my incapacity to comprehend the sheer expanse, this landscape is not truly empty. It’s snow. And ice. And wind. A place defined by the austerity of its uniformity. Stumbling through drifts, with ice crystals forming in my hair, I mumble out aloud, ‘the more one learns of this intricate interplay of earth, weather, altitude, and the living tissues of flora and fauna, the more the mystery deepens.’
