bare the fact bear the fact
New Works
14 Mar - 6 Apr, 2006
Lebenon born, UK raised, Karachi based artist Naiza Khan has
been working with themes relating to displacement, and the female
Self for over a decade, making video and site-specific works.
Drawing has always remained her primary medium, though. For
the first time she places the female nude on center stage with
a provocative series in new mixed media drawings. bare the fact,
bear the fact, explores the areas of essentialised female corporeality
caught between multiple social, political and ritualistic constructs.
Khan's creates semi-narrative, academic-style renditions that
evoke dual instincts of self-preservation and empathy even as
they explore the workings of the gaze in fetishistic desire,
seduction, and pain. Drawing from posed models and images culled
from art history, her figures float, blur, and dissolve into
dream-like, semi-consciousness states of being.
