Sudarshan Shetty returns with a show in Mumbai after 5 years.
Prone to work with large almost monumental large objects making
for a whimsical world in which he engages & inhibits, the
current show made specifically for the small space of Gallery
Chemould looks at smaller objects. Objects that are obstensibly
domestic but at the same time distanced from everyday life.
Objects that express the violence and anarchy around us
of
drowning lives and submerged in plastic.
Objects of our immediate surroundings like the Irani Café
chair, the bent leg table are rendered unfamiliar by the interjection
of other objects - brass guns, eggs, velvet, blades and scissors.
So dentured fruit in a gold-fish bowl, or chairs with wooden
eggs are the latest in Sudarshan Shetty's present work.
Shetty who is a prominent artist of the 90's has consistently
created a new sculptureal language based on 'hybridity'. Shetty
makes certain that the viewer does not remain passive but teased
to respond, provoked to be amazed and thereby participate in
the 'mystery' of the objects.
